3 How is it accomplished?

Overview of the step-by-step method for fretboard mastery

Part II is the beginner pathway. Part III is the intermediate pathway. Both pathways use the same strategy called “single note location”.

  1. Start with any note (in this book I start with the note G).
  2. Play that note on each string from nose to toes and back (for beginners, just the 3 bass-side strings). This is the memorization phase. Because you are only concerned with one note, this exercise is very doable. However, it does not rely on any shortcuts—which is why it works.
  3. If you have that note memorized, then move on to the next note (A). Do the same exercise but for both notes back-to-back.
  4. Once you have gone through all 7 notes, you will then play along with a metronome. The goal is to play each note as half notes (1 note per 2 clicks of the metronome) at 80 BPM.
  5. Utilize musical application for ultimate fretboard mastery. I’ll show you how to play along with songs like Hotel California using your new fretboard knowledge.
  6. Play along with chord progressions. If someone asks “Play a 1 – 4 – 5 – 1 in the key of A”, you will learn how to do just that and in any key with any progression.

Just spend 10 minutes doing the exercises in this book every day. You don’t need to do any more than that. So be sure to set a timer and make it a habit!
